How to select an estate lawyer.

When to hire an attorney to prepare a will and other estate planning documents.

When you’re hiring an attorney, there are four questions to ask before making a decision. If you answer yes to all four, then you’re likely doing the right thing.

Question 1. Do you have a need and is it urgent?

The fact that you’re reading this likely means you understand the importance to plan and act. Life and its uncertainty and unpredictability can create a sense of urgency.

Question 2. If you’re considering an attorney, has s/he explained how your needs would be met?

Your initial legal consultation will provide you the opportunity to discuss your situation, assets, and intentions. You should walk away with an estate plan outline that not only meets your needs but makes sense.

Question 3. Do you like the attorney?

Were they a good listener, did you connect, did you trust them to do a good job? And did they have the patience to explain issues?

Question 4. Did the price seem reasonable?

Creating a proper estate plan can be a significant investment, and in that light, the fee must be fair regarding the work done.
